Although it dates from the 1920s, the former Pershing Square Building's recent $26 million renovation has placed it among Manhattan's highest performing 21st–century buildings.

The Romanesque Revival 125 Park Avenue has been a part of New York City’s midtown skyline for over eight decades, and its 25 stories of class-A commercial space casts a distinguished shadow on the nearby Grand Central Terminal. At street level, though, the former Pershing Square Building resembles anything but an antique. Its signature terra cotta facade got a brush-up in 1996, and the building’s mechancial systems also received a top-to-bottom overhaul as part of that year’s $26 million renovation; another renovation in 2008 brought 125 Park Avenue’s elevators up to state of the art status and gave the landmark building a strikingly modern new lobby and main entrance.

Already a structure whose unique blend of aesthetics bespeaks both an elegant history and forward-thinking present, 125 Park is also in midtown’s green vanguard, thanks to the striking showroom that the office furniture giant Haworth opened on the second floor. The Haworth Showroom is among the first spaces certified as LEED for Commercial Interiors in the city, and its “building within a building” futurism makes it a perfect fit with 125 Park Avenue. 125 Park Avenue is, after all, effortlessly two things at once — a landmark pre-war jewel of a commercial high rise that offers all the contemporary efficiency and convenience a 21st century tenant could ask.
