Related’s Time Warner Center Seeks -EB, Named 2008 BOMA Office Building of the Year
Back in late April, the Mid-Atlantic Conference of Building Owners and Managers Association named the Related Companies’ Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle its 2008 Office Building of the Year (for buildings larger than 1 million square feet). Related is currently seeking a LEED-EB rating for the 80-story, 2.8 million-square foot tower, which was completed back in 2004. In order to confer the award, BOMA ranked buildings on a scale of 1-80 based on categories that included environmental and energy management, emergency preparedness, and tenant relations.

ML: Green Construction Booming in Manhattan (Photos)
Last Thursday, I spent an afternoon out of the office and took some construction progress photos of a number of the LEED projects that we’ve presented here at gbNYC. I started out on 42nd Street at SJP Properties’ LEED Gold hopeful 11 Times Square before heading downtown to Battery Park City’s Riverhouse (seeking LEED Platinum) and Goldman Sachs Tower (Gold). We haven’t written about it yet (we will) but I finished up with some shots of Related’s Robert A.M. Stern-designed Harrison condominium development on 76th and Amsterdam which is aiming for Silver. As you’ll see, steel at 11 Times Square is well out of the ground and lagging just a few floors behind the tower’s concrete core.

Green Depot Manhattan to Open at Bowery Landmark
Brooklyn-based green building materials and products supplier Green Depot announced yesterday that it will begin construction on a 3,000-square-foot Manhattan showroom at 222 Bowery, between Price and Spring Streets. Designed by architects Studio Mapos, the project should get underway on May 1 and will seek a LEED (presumably under Commercial Interiors) Gold or Platinum rating. The Queen Anne-style 222 Bowery was landmarked in 1998 and is currently a six-story loft co-op.

CUNY’s 280 Buildings Get $110M Greener
The Baruch College newspaper The Ticker has a nice wrap-up this week of all the green initiatives going on at CUNY schools across the City. CUNY is New York’s largest university system, with 23 campuses and 280 buildings. Over the past ten years, CUNY has invested $110 million in upgrading its facilities to make them more eco-friendly. The science lab at Bronx Community College, for example, runs entirely off solar panels on its roof, and two more solar roofs are planned at LaGuardia Community College and Kingsborough Community College. CUNY’s first eco-friendly science building just opened at Lehman College and additional sustainable science buildings are planned for City College and Brooklyn College.

Ithaca Opens Platinum Doors on $18M Business School by Robert A.M. Stern
Last Tuesday, Ithaca College unveiled its new 38,000-square-foot, $18 million School of Business building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. The project is aiming for a LEED Platinum rating and will include a Center for Sustainable Management to incorporate green business principles into Ithaca’s MBA program. The project team, which also included Gilbane Building Co., used a computer model to passively design the structure according to solar movement. The project also features a green roof, graywater system, and locally-sourced construction materials.
