In Newburgh, Kaplan Hall Earns SUNY’s 11th LEED Gold Rating

The SUNY system’s 11th LEED Gold rating is the 87,000-square-foot Kaplan Hall at SUNY Orange – it’s the first LEED-certified building anywhere in Orange County.

The State University of New York’s Orange campus recently earned a LEED Gold rating for its 87,000-square-foot Kaplan Hall, which opened in 2011 and was designed by JMZ Architects of Glens Falls, New York. The project is just the 11th in the SUNY system to earn LEED Gold, with five of those projects located at Cornell. Only two other community colleges in New York – Monroe and Hudson Valley – have LEED-certified buildings.

According to SUNY Orange, the building uses 39 percent less energy than a comparable structure. It features efficient lighting and HVAC systems that – thus far – have saved the university nearly $65,000 in annual energy costs. Roof-mounted solar panels generate 20,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and save $3000 annually. During construction, the project team recycled 570 tons of construction waste. Forty-four percent of construction materials were sourced locally, and 90 percent of interior spaces receive natural daylight or have exterior views. The building’s efficient plumbing fixtures should reduce water consumption by 26 percent, and a graywater system provides irrigation for the drought-resistant, locally-sourced landscaping.

In 2012, SUNY Orange received $370,000 in rebates from NYSERDA for the building’s energy efficiency and water conservation systems. The three-story facility features classrooms, science labs, a two-story library, a cybercafe, faculty offices, and also serves as a student center.
