Brooklyn Grange, the Long Island City-based rooftop commercial farm, has announced plans for a new 45,000-square-foot installation at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “We were looking to be creative, and we found a perfect use for this underutilized roof,” Andrew Kimball, head of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, told the New York Post.
The installation will sit on a Navy Yard building adjacent to Flushing Avenue and Cumberland Street and should open by mid-May. In addition to operating the farm, Brooklyn Grange will also host a regular series of farmers’ markets at the Navy Yard. New York City’s DEP is providing nearly $600,000 in funding for the project; the company and the Navy Yard are each contributing $310,000.
If it seems odd that a company based in Queens is named for another borough, it’s not without good reason: when Brooklyn Grange was founded in 2009, a site in Brooklyn had been identified for its first installation. But the deal fell through, and with fundraising and other branding efforts underway, the founders went with it.
Brooklyn Grange’s Long Island City installation (pictured) is located at 37-18 Northern Boulevard and operates under a 10-year lease from Acumen Capital Partners. It features approximately 1.2 million pounds of soil and over 20,000 linear feet of green roofing material.
The ongoing redevelopment of the historic Navy Yard into a mixed-use destination encompasses 300 acres and 40 buildings on the Brooklyn waterfront, including three fully functioning dry docks, and four active piers. Industrial tenants can expect to pay approximately $15 per square foot for space.
