Bronx Zoo Eco Restroom Named 2007 Project of the Year

The Bronx Zoo’s $1.6 million green restroom- dubbed the Eco Restroom- takes top honors in this year’s edition of New York Construction’s list of top green building projects.

Perhaps we didn’t jump the gun here at gbNYC by presenting our top five New York City green buildings to you earlier this week- New York Construction‘s December feature is the magazine’s Best of 2007 list, which offers a selection of top New York City projects across a number of industry sectors

A number of important green projects were recognized, but the first that we’ll note took top honors in the environmental category. The Bronx Zoo’s $1.6 million, 1,100-square-foot Eco Restroom, which we’ve written about before, earned Environmental Project of the Year accolades for its sustainable design features that include 14 composting toilets, graywater systems, and extensive interior daylighting.

The site footprint includes 85 percent of the perimeter of the original restroom facility, which helped minimize the impact of construction on the surrounding landscape. The compost collection bins are located in the building’s nine-foot deep basement and are ventilated by pipes (which you can see protruding through the roof in the image above) oriented through the slanted roof in order to maximize the effect of local winds and keep the system odorless.

The project team included Edelman Sultan Knox Wood, a Lafayette Street-based architecture firm that specializes in green projects, and Summit Construction Services Group of White Plains.

That is one cool restroom. It is nice to see some of the green projects that are being taken on in the Northeast. There is a lot of publicity regarding projects out west, but it is great to see someone tackle a project with unique climate issues.
