Daniel Libeskind Leaps Into Prefab Market: Other A-List Architects to Follow?

You may have read about Daniel Libeskind's 5500-square-foot prefabricated home when it was unveiled a few weeks ago, but I thought it was important for us to mention the design here at gbNYC briefly before we head into the holiday weekend. Mr. Libeskind is calling the two-story house "unprecedented;" its price tag, for prefab, certainly is: $2.8 to $4.2 million depending on where the house is installed. The house will be manufactured mostly from wood with an aluminum exterior cladding and draw some of its power from a solar installation. The design includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms; a stainless steel staircase connects its two floors. The interiors emphasize a natural flow of space, including the kitchen which is part of what Mr. Libeskind calls the home's "grand room."

Modular Homes’ LEED-Certified Model Home to Debut in Robbinsville, NJ

Modular Homes, Inc. (“MHI”) is an Edison, New Jersey-based custom modular home builder that will break ground in April on what it hopes will be a LEED-certified model home in Robbinsville, New Jersey. LEED projects in New Jersey have been relatively far and few between (though that seems to be changing), and Modular is currently in the design phase for the project. Modular construction is obviously much more environment-friendly than traditional construction, as individual components are prefabricated off-site, thus reducing construction waste and increasing the use of excess materials.

Ikea, Skanska Unveil First Prefab BoKlok Show Home in Gateshead, England

In light of MoMA’s looming exhibition on the subject this summer, prefab housing is guaranteed to be a hot green topic throughout 2008. As such, Ikea last week unveiled its first BoKlok (“smart living” in Swedish) show home in England’s Gateshead (in the north, just south of Newcastle). The company actually started its line of prefabricated homes in cooperation with Skanska back in 1997, and received planning permission for ninety-three of the BoKlok dwellings in Gateshead last April. Ikea has already installed 3,500 of the homes throughout Scandinavia, which are offered in two- and three-bedroom arrangements.
