The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, just to the northeast of Schenectady, recently earned formal LEED certification from USGBC. The 55,000-square-foot project was designed by architects Woodard Connor Gillies & Seleman of Albany and opened to the public back in December of 2006. NYSERDA served as a technical advisor on the project, which participated in the New York Energy $mart New Construction Program, and reviewed the proposed energy-saving features of the building proposed by the design team, which included high-efficiency windows, additional insulation, efficient lighting with occupancy control, efficient HVAC systems, and a digitally controlled building management system.

First Green Schools Guide-Certified School Opens Doors at 213 East 63rd Street
After taking effect earlier this year, the New York City Green Schools Guide and Rating System (“GSG”) now applies to all new school construction, modernization, and renovation projects in the five boroughs. The GSG and Rating System is based on LEED, but also incorporates elements from the Collaborative for High Performing Schools Rating System (developed by Washington, Massachusetts, and New York States) and the School Construction Authority’s Best Practices. It’s intended to complement Local Law 86 (which mandates LEED Silver for most public projects in New York City). Designed by Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects, the first school certified under the program opened for the academic year back on September 2 at 213 East 63rd Street.

Perkins + Will to Design $1B LEED Silver Police Academy in Queens
Earlier this week, the Department of Design and Construction and the New York City Police Department selected Perkins + Will to design the NYPD’s new $1 billion Police Academy, which will be located in College Point, Queens. The project will seek at least a LEED Silver rating from USGBC and will consolidate the NYPD’s existing Academy in Manhattan and other facilities in the Bronx and Brooklyn across a 35-acre site that currently serves as the city’s largest auto impound. The new Academy will feature a firing range, 450,000-square-foot physical training area, 250 classrooms, and a 100,000-square-foot “tactical village” that will include mock street scenes, subway cars, and a bodega.

Viñoly’s Silver Staten Island Stationhouse Approved by Art Commission
Earlier this week, the New York City Art Commission approved Rafael Viñoly’s design for the 49,000-square-foot 121st Police Precinct on Staten Island; the project aims to be Gotham’s first LEED-certified police facility. The Art Commission, which was founded back in 1898, serves as New York City’s design review agency, reviewing permanent works of art, architecture, and landscape architecture that are planned for construction or renovation across the five boroughs.

Rafael Vinoly’s 121st Precinct Stationhouse Lands LEED on Staten Island
It’s not often we hear about Staten Island on the cutting edge of green building. But the oft-forgotten borough is home to at least two bold new LEED projects currently underway: a police station and a mixed-use riverfront. The NYPD’s 121st Precinct Stationhouse has been designed pursuant to Local Law 86, which requires most new city-owned or operated buildings to obtain at least a LEED Silver rating. There is presently scant information available about the 47,000-square-foot, Rafael Vinoly-designed project, which will be the first LEED Silver police precinct in the city. The cantilevered structure extends linearly out from the site’s irregular footprint, connecting the public both to the natural landscape behind the precinct and, symbolically, to the NYPD housed within.

LEED Silver for Bronx Library Center & Local Law 86 Primer
