Upper West Side’s First Green Condo Complete on 72nd Street
We’ve written previously about the Harsen House; the 16-story, 22-unit project at 120 West 72nd Street broke ground in late 2006 and developer Anbau Enterprises sold the project out within a scant seven months. The building was designed by BKSK Architects (designers of the Queens Botanical Garden Visitor’s Center, which recently earned Gotham’s first LEED Platinum rating) with interiors by Andres Escobar. Green design elements include hot water radiant heat, FSC-certified oak floors, ducted kitchen hoods which ventilate air directly outdoors, and energy-efficient, floor to ceiling windows. Anbau recently announced that it has completed the 60,000-square-foot project after inking retail heavyweight Sleepy’s (The Mattress Professionals) to a long-term lease for the Harsen House’s 4000-square-foot ground-floor retail space.

A Greener Suburban Sprawl?
While green building and luxury living in Manhattan are now practically married, a truly unique candidate for LEED certification is now going up forty miles out of the city. “Green is becoming the new amenity of choice in luxury housing. Today’s socially conscious, upscale homebuyers are more concerned about the size of their carbon footprint than the size of their master bath,” Mark Hallett Robbins, president of NRDC Residential, the developer of Windermere on the Lake, announced in a press release. Windermere on the Lake is a planned residential community being developed in the Fairfield County community of North Stamford.

Monday LEEDoff: A Peek at Brooklyn’s First Living Wall in Williamsburg
Consulting team Sphere Trending recently posted some photos on its blog of the Oulu Bar & Eco-Lounge in Williamsburg, home of Brooklyn’s first living wall. The wall covers the front façade of the 2500-square-foot building, which is aiming for LEED Gold certification and was designed by architect Evangeline Dennie. Dennie has some amazing installation photos of the vegetal wall in her online portfolio. Having dealt with these kinds of wall installations a little myself, I can tell you they’re not easy to mount or maintain, so my hat goes off to Dennie for making this one look so good. Some of Oulu’s other green features include biodegradable ceramic tile on the walls, water-based grout sealer in the bathrooms, natural Mica panels promoting light exchange, sheetrock exterior walls made of recycled material and post-consumer recycled paper, and a garage door that provides natural ventilation.

Monday LEEDoff: VillageGreen, Herman Miller’s International HQ in Chippenham, England
Designed by Gensler, furniture company Herman Miller’s new international headquarters was completed in February of 2006, but recently received its official LEED-NC Gold designation from USGBC.
