235 West 23rd Street: Communist Party USA HQ (Video)

Last month, the Communist Party USA unveiled a $1 million green renovation of its headquarters at 235 West 23rd Street in Chelsea. The AP called the space’s decor “more Macy’s than Marx,” though it does have a decidedly red theme as you can see in a video posted on the party’s website (link below). The renovation included the installation of modern work stations that are finished with non-toxic linseed oil, as well as biodegradeable carpeting. The space accomodates 21 CPUSA staffers and features floor-to-ceiling windows, transparent glass walls, light occupancy sensors, and employed a number of other unspecified non-toxic construction materials.

Denari’s HL23 to Purchase 100 Percent Green Power

The $22 million HL23 residential condo project at West 23rd Street and 10th Avenue, which rises above and cantilevers out over the High Line, will purchase 100 percent green power, according to a report that appeared yesterday on GlobeSt.com. Designed by Los Angeles-based Neil M. Denari Architects, the team also includes Thomas Juul-Hansen Architects, which designed the project’s interiors. YRG Sustainability Consultants of New York will assist the design team in pursuit of a LEED Gold rating from USGBC. GlobeSt.com also reports on a number of green design features at the 39,000-square-foot HL23, including reflective roofing, a target energy consumption reduction of 15 to 25 percent below code, construction waste management, and recycled-content building materials.

450 West 14th Street: LEED for Core and Shell Above the High Line from Morris Adjmi

Developed by Charles Blaichman and designed by Morris Adjmi Architects, 450 West 14th Street will sit above an existing three-story masonry industrial building along 9th Avenue, straddle the High Line, and also seek an unspecified level of certification under USGBC’s LEED for Core and Shell (“LEED-CS”) rating system. The Slatin Report describes the project as a boutique office building that will offer 8,000 square feet of retail across two different ground-floor spaces. Some of the space is already leased; Japanese fashion company Theory has apparently signed up for 20,000 square feet of office space (about a quarter of the building’s total) while one of its designers, Helmut Lang, will occupy one of the ground-floor retail spaces.
