Cooper Union's 41 Cooper Square Laboratory is Mean, Green, and Demands to be Seen

Fanboyish eruptions of enthusiasm and admiration are presumably not what you, The Reader, turn to gbNYC to read. (Neither are rhyming headlines, but... yeah, see what I did there?) No, you're here for the buried links to "classic" rock performances and self-referential leads and, theoretically, news on green building in Gotham. Which I do try to keep in mind, but... have you seen the new Cooper Union laboratory building at 41 Cooper Square? The building, which was designed by Morphosis and Gruzen Samton, is super-innovative inside and out, very interesting to look at, peerlessly sustainable and generally as graceful a marriage of form and function as anything of its size downtown. It may not be your cup of aesthetic tea (mmm, aesthetic tea), but 41 Cooper Square is, for green building heads, definitely worth an ogle.

Johnson Hall of Science: LEED Gold at St. Lawrence University

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based design firm KlingStubbins, in cooperation with Croxton Collaborative Architects, has achieved a LEED Gold rating from USGBC for the Johnson Hall of Science at St. Lawrence University; the project is the sixth for which KlingStubbins has earned LEED certification during 2008. The 122,000-square-foot building will house the biology and chemistry departments and is St. Lawrence's first phase of a project which will also call for the construction of an additional 120,000 square feet. The school's four existing science buildings will be renovated over the next three phases to create additional academic space for physics, math, geology, and computer science.

Sciame Tops Out Mayne's Green Academic Building at Cooper Union

Frank Sciame Construction Co. recently topped out Cooper Union's new $150 million academic building at 41 Cooper Square (on Third Avenue between East 6th and 7th Streets). The 9-story, 175,000-square-foot tower was designed by 2005 Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne and his Morphosis firm (in collaboration with Gruzen Samton) and is seeking at least a LEED Gold rating, with Platinum still a possibility. Cooper Union calls the project New York City's first green academic building; the space will house the school's architecture, engineering, humanities and social sciences departments.
