Number Six Sludge: Now Available in Manhattan's Greenest Neighborhood, Somehow? (UPDATED)

Well, this is kind of surprising. Last week's post on the continued use -- and impending legislation to curtail said use -- of mega-nasty heating sludge Number Six heating oil pinpointed upper Manhattan and the South Bronx as the neighborhoods in which ol' Number Six was most commonly used. And while that's still true, the Downtown Express reports that six buildings in Battery Park City, Manhattan's most ostentatiously green residential neighborhood, are using Number Four or Number Six oil to heat their buildings. This isn't in violation of BPC's vaunted green building code (and isn't mentioned in LEED's guidelines, either), mostly because it seems like no one really thought about it until recently. Presumably, that's going to be changing soon.

Hartford's Hollander Gets Connecticut Capital's First Green Roof

Yesterday, we covered Trenton's very cool Trenton Ferry development. Today, it's Hartford's Hollander Center, a LEED-EB candidate that recently broke out the first green roof in Connecticut's capital city. Don't worry, this is still gbNYC, not gbTheCapitalCitiesOfOtherAdjacentStates, but when good green news happens in other cities, it's still worthy of mention. Especially when, as in the case of the Hollander Center, the project in question could represent a real step forward in a city that could use a boost. Hartford, like Trenton, is a moderately faded metropolis that already has the jobs, transit options, infrastructure and building stock in place for a green reinvention. So while the Hollander's green roof is lovely, the possibilty this project represents -- a sustainable revival in the heart of Hartford's seen-better-days downtown -- is even more exciting.

Stephen B. Jacobs Group's 328 West 38th Street Aims for LEED Silver

When completed this coming fall, Stephen B. Jacobs Group's 328 West 38th Street will offer 568 rental residential units, 120 of which will be set aside as affordable housing. The $400 million, 24-story project includes two separate towers that will each feature a 4700-square-foot green roof, as well as graywater collection systems.

What's particularly interesting is that the architect sought- and received- a zoning variance that allowed it to recess the 38th and 37th Street entrances from the rest of the building's frontage in order to incorporate natural landscaping. Those entrances include high-performance glazing which will, in part, support the project's application for a LEED Silver rating from USGBC. Each tower is constructed with poured-in-place concrete; limestone clads the street-level base, which will offer 11,000 square feet of retail space. The project team also includes Rosenwasser Grossman Consulting Engineers and interior designers Saladino Group and Stratford Design Group.
