Residential Sustainability Seminar

Susan Singer, "New York City's first Eco-Broker," will chair the premier of the Residential Sustainability Seminar, a panel discussion series hosted at the LEED certified sustainable residences at One Jackson Square. Each seminar will feature experts from throughout the city's green scene discussing such topics as energy conservation, weatherization, solar hot water, solar photovoltaic energy and green roofs. The panelists at this event:

Ellen Honigstock, LEED AP, on sustainable retrofits

Jimmy Hatzis, ASK Construction, on weatherization

Adam Heidt, HR Reps, on solar hot water

Nocole Clock, Empower Clean Energy Systems, on solar energy

Beth Lieberman, LEED AP, on green roofs.

Green Market: Supermarket Signs Lease at LEED Hopeful Queens Family Courthouse Development in Jamaica

Because I'm a snob, and because I think his shtick is kind of silly, I haven't read Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point." But I've used the phrase in coversation -- usually trying to pinpoint the exact moment when the New Jersey Nets lost me as a fan -- as a substitute for "the moment when something achieves critical mass." And while we're obviously still a ways away from green building in New York City having reached critical mass, there's a sense, in reading about the just-announced lease signed by King Polo supermarkets at the LEED hopeful Queens Family Courthouse development in Jamaica, Queens, that something tipping point-y is going on. Surely the existence of a LEED hopeful development in a comparatively distant Queens neighborhood that didn't previously have a supermarket, period, has to mean something, right?

Staten Island to Green, Develop Homeport Navy Base

Opened in 1990 as something of a pork product designed to boost the fortunes of Staten Island's fraying north shore, Homeport Naval Base was closed just four years later. That left 36 acres of potentially desirable waterfront property -- and Homeport's single 1,410-foot pier -- vacant, and Staten Island's erstwhile "gold coast" just as tarnished as it had been before. The site remained fallow even after ownership reverted to the city in 1995, with a host of Giuliani-administration development plans coming to naught. Now, five years after Mayor Bloomberg launched a task force on Homeport's development and three years after the area was rezoned, something is finally happening at Homeport.
