Panel to Tackle Preserving & Greening Industrial Buildings at Municipal Art Society

We apologize for some technical issues on our back end over the weekend that interrupted our regular posting schedule, but we're back up and running as of this evening. On Wednesday, the Municipal Art Society of New York is sponsoring a program called "A Second (and Green) Career for Industrial Buildings: Recycling New York's Industrial Past, Inspiration From Home and Abroad. " The event will be held from 6:30 until 8:00PM with a reception to follow. A panel that includes Andrew Kimball of the Brooklyn Navy Yard (you'll recall the extensive green efforts that continue to take place there along the waterfront) and Robert Powers , preservation consultant on the tax-certified rehabilitation of the Austin-Nichols Warehouse, among others, will investigate two ways of preserving industrial buildings: using them for new manufacturing ventures or adapting them for other uses- housing, schools, or as cultural venues.

Navy Yard's Perry Building to Feature Renewable Energy Pilot Program

The Brooklyn Navy Yard's Perry Building will be home to art restoration firm SurroundArt once it opens up this summer. Interiors for the 89,000-square-foot space, which is aiming for a LEED Silver under USGBC's Core and Shell program, were designed by Steven Kratchman Architect, while the exterior of the building is being executed by Stantec. (Check out our previous posts on the Perry Building for more details on both the project and SurroundArt.) Last week, though, Stantec announced some details on the project's renewable energy features, which will include a photovoltaic and wind power pilot program. The firm is partnering with National Grid Energy Services in order to install a number of solar panels and wind turbines on the Perry Building's roof. The system will- at least initially- serve just the Perry Building and be tied to its main electrical equipment.

Brooklyn Navy Yard Redevelopment to Include Green Historical Center

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced plans for the Brooklyn Navy Yard Historical Center, a 25,000 square foot facility that will seek an unspecified LEED rating. The $15 million project contemplates the renovation and expansion of the Navy Yard’s Building 92, which was originally built in 1857 as the United States Marine Corps Commandment’s residence, as well as the construction of a new structure behind the existing building. The Center will offer a variety of exhibits presenting the Navy Yard’s history, as well as community meeting space and offices for the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment.

Monday LEEDoff: 400,000 Square Foot B&H Expansion at Brooklyn Navy Yard

Last week, the Brooklyn Navy Yard industrial park announced that B&H Photo-Video, a Midtown-based photo, DVD, and computer retailer, will increase its operations at the park with a $50 million, 400,000 square foot expansion project. The new seven story building will create 300 new jobs in phone and Internet customer service, as well as provide B&H with increased warehouse space. The company will also have an option to build an additional 200,000 square feet at the site, with construction commencing this summer and completion scheduled for 2009. B&H, which has been a tenant at the park for the past ten years and currently occupies a one-story building, will seek a LEED Silver rating for the project.
