gbNYC Internal Affairs: Excuse Us While We Attend These Nups

Not to put Stephen's business all out in the street or anything, but... let me put Stephen's business out in the street for a minute. He's down in Virginia right now, writing out place cards and double-checking catering and generally doing the things that people who are a day or so away from getting married do. This is because he's getting married this weekend. I know, right? They grow up so fast!

As SDP and I have been friends since we were very small -- we used to discuss photovoltaics and green roofs during kickball games at Ridgewood, New Jersey's Ira W. Travell Elementary -- I'll be attending this wedding, as well. While my role in the proceedings is not nearly as important as Stephen's -- people can generally find their seats without some ironical tuxedo'd guy's mumbled help -- it is demanding enough, time-wise, that neither he nor I will be doing much posting on gbNYC for a little bit. Regularly scheduled programming -- that is, posts by me; Stephen's going to be on his honeymoon -- will resume early next week.

I spent the weekend down in southwestern Virginia with my girlfriend at her parents’ place, so I thought it would be appropriate to write about a local LEED project today. Unfortunately, green news is still bit thin in those parts, but I was able to dig up a few LEED projects in Roanoke, which is about an hour west of her folks. One of them is the rehabilitation of the State & City Building, a historic 101-year-old, eight-story structure that local developer Rob Glenn is converting into 3,700-square-foot, full-floor residential condominiums.

Cromley Lofts: 1210 Queen Street, Alexandria, Virginia

Cromley Lofts in Alexandria is the State of Virginia’s first LEED-certified condominium development, a three-story, eight-unit adaptive reuse project that earned a Gold rating from USGBC after completion earlier this year. Many of my friends from law school live in Northern Virginia, so this was a particularly interesting project for me to hear about from my good friend Emily, who briefed me about it last weekend when Allison and I saw her at a law school classmate’s wedding in the lovely Northern Virginia wine country.

1210 Queen Street has a colorful history dating from 1910, when it served as a warehouse for Alexandria’s railroad business. Local developer William Cromley bought the property back in 2004, and incorporated a number of green design elements in pursuit of his LEED rating.

Kettler Capitals Iceplex: Arlington, Virginia

The Washington Capitals’ new training center facility in Arlington, Virginia isn’t a stadium at all (it only seats 1,000 people), but I think it’s important to track the green building efforts of our professional sports teams. As I’ve written about before, green stadiums and arenas present unique design issues that aren’t sufficiently contemplated by LEED as it exists in its present form (though efforts are underway to address this).

Some green building news to catch up on after a few days of mini-vacation for me. 7 World Trade Center opens for business. The U.S. Green Building Council, which has developed the nation's only common standard of measurement for a "green" building, recently certified 7 World Trade Center at Gold status under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. As the first "green" office building in New York City, 7 World Trade Center has been recognized for its pioneering approach to providing occupants with cleaner air and more natural light, while conserving energy and other natural resources. Green efforts include: Rainwater collection for irrigating the park and cooling the building; use of recycled material in the construction effort and separation of refuse and recyclable materials on site; and use of latest glass technology, providing maximum building energy conservation and more natural light for tenants.
