Cupcakes Coming to LEED Silver-Hopeful Harrison on Upper West Side

We've written about a number of Related's green development efforts here in Manhattan previously, including the Upper East Side's Brompton and the Superior Ink condos in the West Village. One Related project we haven't discussed in much detail, though, is the Robert A.M. Stern-designed Harrison condominiums. Located at 305 Amsterdam Avenue at West 76th Street on the Upper West Side, the project is substantially complete, and now has two more retail tenants to offer in addition to a second-floor Equinox health club. According to a press release, a children's retail store called Giggle and a Crumbs Bake Shop (which seems odd given that another Crumbs is located across the street just a few blocks south on Amsterdam, but perhaps it's a relocation?) have signed leases and will move into the Harrison's available ground floor retail space.

Yesterday, we used Greentech Media's 2009 year-end round-up as a way into a (much) longer post about how government is changing/creating the green building landscape. One item from Michael Kanellos' roundup to which we did not link, though, was this one -- on the emergence of schools as a major component of the green-retrofit marketplace. As a consequence of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- better known by its nickname, The Stimulus -- billions of federal dollars are slated for green retrofits on government buildings; because schools own their own (often inefficent) buildings, they're expected to jump at the chance to improve building performance. But this post isn't really about that.

Expanded, Green Mandell School Set for Columbus Square on Upper West Side

Aragon Construction is set to begin work on a new home for the Mandell School at the Chetrit Group's Columbus Square development on the Upper West Side early next year. The 50,000-square-foot school will accommodate up to 650 students through the eighth grade and occupy Columbus Square's entire second floor, as well as parts of the ground floor and basement. The school was designed by New York City-based J.R.S. Architects, Inc. and, although it's unclear whether the project will formally obtain LEED certification, it has been designed with a number of sustainable design features, including recycled-content rubber flooring, efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting, as well as recycled-content interior wood paneling. The school will also offer students an 8000-square-foot outdoor terrace. The school's new location at Columbus Square will consolidate three existing locations across the Upper West Side; images below are of an earlier 9000-square-foot project also executed by J.R.S. Architects for the school. Columbus Square itself is a 320,000-square-foot, three-building development on Columbus Avenue between West 97th and West 100th Streets.
