You may have read about Daniel Libeskind's 5500-square-foot prefabricated home when it was unveiled a few weeks ago, but I thought it was important for us to mention the design here at gbNYC briefly before we head into the holiday weekend. Mr. Libeskind is calling the two-story house "unprecedented;" its price tag, for prefab, certainly is: $2.8 to $4.2 million depending on where the house is installed. The house will be manufactured mostly from wood with an aluminum exterior cladding and draw some of its power from a solar installation. The design includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms; a stainless steel staircase connects its two floors. The interiors emphasize a natural flow of space, including the kitchen which is part of what Mr. Libeskind calls the home's "grand room."
Interestingly, Mr. Libeskind, who created the master plan for the World Trade Center redevelopment, has only worked on two residential projects during his career (one of which, according to the New York Times, is a private home in Connecticut). Berlin-based Proportion is marketing and distributing the house but shying away from calling it prefab, instead emphasizing Mr. Libeskind's involvement in the design down to the home's smallest details. The company is building a prototype in Datteln, Germany, and expects to begin sales in earnest later this summer. Proportion is also aiming to enlist other high-profile architects to create an entire line of prefabricated homes, so it will be curious to see how this initial effort with Mr. Libeskind proceeds in the coming months.
