The NYC Department of Buildings now requires that all projects submitted for approval include calculations to demonstrate compliance with the NYS Energy Code. At the request of the New York City Department of Buildings the AIA New York Chapter, ASHRAE-NY and Urban Green Council have assembled a group of speakers to disseminate their knowledge and understanding of the NYS Energy Code and to make clear the Energy Code submittal requirements for all projects in NYC.
These sessions will take place over 5 evenings in January as follows:
Jan. 5th, 6 - 8 pm: Session 1, Overview of the Greening of NYC and other Codes
Jan. 6th, 6 - 8 pm: Session 2, Building Enclosures and the Energy Code
Jan. 7th, 6 - 8 pm: Session 3, Lighting Design and the Energy Code
Jan. 19th, 6 - 8 pm: Session 4, Mechanical Systems and the Energy Code (see below)
Jan. 20th, 6 - 8 pm: Session 5, Energy Modeling and the Energy Code
Session 4: Mechanical Systems and the Energy Code
January 19th, 6 - 8 pm
John Rundell, LEED AP, Buro Happold
This presentation will address the design of HVAC and service hot water systems from an energy conservation and energy code perspective. HVAC design will be addressed in the context of both the current ASHRAE 90.1/2004 and more stringent editions coming soon. The various system types and equipment options from an energy efficiency perspective will be reviewed, including but not limited to the more advanced cogeneration and trigeneration systems, standard heat recovery methods, demand ventilation, renewable energy systems, and, sensing and control systems. The interrelationships between lighting and daylighting, solar heat gain, building insulation, and air infiltration through the envelope on the one hand and the HVAC systems that must respond to these loads on the other. The issues framing the HVAC challenges and the HVAC options to then comply with the Energy Code will be addressed.
John Rundell, PE, LEED AP
An advocate for energy efficient practices, John Rundell seeks to incorporate practical energy efficient measures into all building services designs. With a background in mechanical engineering John practices as a consulting engineer for the multi-disciplinary engineering firm, Buro Happold. He was lured to New York City by the challenges of bold, sustainable projects requiring rigorous thought and creative design responses. John’s interests are in the integration of renewable energy forms into the built environment, including passive and active solar thermal systems.
International design experience with projects in Asia and the Middle East has shown John what an asset a clear and comprehensive energy conservation code can be.
