Chautauqua Wind Energy to Capture Green Power Upstate
Calling itself in the “small wind” business as opposed to large-scale, utility-grade wind farms, Chautauqua Wind Energy plans to move into the fledgling market for smaller scale, residential wind turbines beginning this fall. Based in Chautauqua County, New York, the green energy company will focus on installing and servicing 5 to 10 kilowatt wind turbines. The company will act as a dealer and carry turbines from different manufacturers, including Bergey, Windterra, and Helix Wind. Chautauqua will also act as a consultant to determine the optimal installation for each of its customers. Chautauqua County is apparently a prime spot for wind energy. Boasting nearly constant Class 3 winds (15 miles per hour), the area is home to some of the windiest areas in New York State, which is actually the 15th windiest state in the union.

Vivavi Teams With Sheldrake to Open Green Furniture Store at Riverhouse
Josh Dorfman and our friends at Vivavi have teamed with The Sheldrake Organization to open an Eco Pop-Up Store at the developer’s Riverhouse condo in Battery Park City. As you’ll recall, the project is aiming for a LEED Platinum rating and recently earned significant green press after Leonardo Di Caprio purchased an apartment in the 32-story, 264-unit tower. The store, which is a fully-furnished Unit 8D, adjacent to the Riverhouse sales center, is open to the public 7 days a week, and features pieces from 18 different green-minded designers, including Brave Space, Modern Bamboo, and Animavi, as well as a Team 7 dining room and office furnishings from Knu Furniture. Vivavi is calling the Pop-Up Store the first of its kind within a residential building in New York City, and it’s certainly the first to exclusively feature green living products.

Feeling Greener Already: The Healing Industry Takes on Sustainability*
Hospitals and clinics are among the most conspicuous energy consumers on the planet. The need for infection control introduces a fog of harsh chemicals that are rough on lungs as well as the wastewater stream. Air quality has to be monitored and changed frequently. And because hospitals never sleep, neither do expensive, sensitive respirators and scanning machines. Add to that an interminable flow of disposable needles, gloves and blood bags, and you can understand why so many hospitals have a Godzilla-sized carbon footprint. At the same time, as healing spaces, hospitals are striving to gain ground within the green movement. Healthcare administrators recognize that green buildings are healthy buildings, promoting speedier recovery rates and improving staff performance, while simultaneously saving energy and reducing operations costs.

Learning from the Germans: What Is Green Architecture?
The Goethe-Institut New York, a branch of Germany’s global cultural institute, is hosting a series of lectures on green design featuring prominent German architects. The next lecture, by Düsseldorf-based Christoph Ingenhoven, is tonight, Monday, May 19th. Ingenhoven Architects’ design for the new zero-energy Main Station in Stuttgart, to be built from 2010 - 2016, was awarded the Europe Holcim Award Silver 2005 and the Global Holcim Award Gold 2006. Goethe-Institut New York is holding a two-year lecture series called “What Is Green Architecture?” which started in February, to transform its landmark Beaux-Arts townhouse on Fifth Avenue “into a showcase of sustainable design.”

Coordination. Integration. Beyond the bells and whistles of sexy, but expensive, green design features such as green roofs or geothermal heating and cooling systems, sustainable construction is about a truly collaborative effort between owners, designers, and contractors. While the former are certainly more likely to earn a project on the local paper’s front page, educated […]

In a presentation at last month’s 2007 AIA National Convention in San Antonio, Frank Musica, an attorney with a Maryland-based insurance company, provided an overview of twenty-one actual “green claims” brought against engineers and architects.
