The Mary M. Hooker Environmental Studies Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut opened back in 1952 and provides practical environmental education for K-8 students. The school is about to undergo a two-year renovation that will seek a LEED Gold rating from USGBC. Designed by BL Companies, the expansion will include a 30-seat science thereater, a greenhouse, an acquatics lab, and feature a working ecosystem in the lobby. BL’s design also includes a butterfly vivarian- one of just a few in the Northeast.

Connecticut Construction Industry: Clarify Purview of Proposed Green Building Legislation
We’ve commented extensively here at gbNYC on proposed state- and local-level green building legislation. One consistent critique we’ve had is that many pieces of legislation have either left key green terms undefined or failed to accurately and comprehensively articulate how the legislation will be implemented. These considerations are critical given that 100 state-level, LEED-driven green building bills have been introduced here in 2008, with 18 actually taking effect. Connecticut’s construction industry recently voiced these types of concerns with respect to proposed legislation that would mandate LEED Silver certification- or its “equivalent”- for public and private sector projects. Industry representatives are concerned over the legislation’s ambiguity, pointing out that there is no definition or guidance within the legislation with respect to what an “equivalent” rating to LEED might be.

Heritage Realty Services to Seek LEED Rating for 200K S/F Commercial Property in Greenwich
New York City-based Heritage Realty Services recently purchased 200,000-square-foot 600 Steamboat Road in Greenwich, Connecticut for $200 million. The deal is scheduled to close this fall and Heritage plans to upgrade a variety of building systems, among other renovations. The 36-year-old waterfront property sits adjacent to Greenwich Harbor includes a 600-space parking garage and a 350-foot-long floating dock. Architects Roger Ferris and Partners are supervising the project and will seek an unspecified level of LEED certification for the upgrades. Greenwich-based Gladstone Real Estate is banking on asking rents of $150 per square foot in light of recent local deals and 660 Steamboat Road’s location near I-95, the Northeast Corridor train line, and waterfront access.

ML: Rose Companies’ Metro Green Breaks Ground in Stamford
A LEED for Neighborhood Development Pilot Project- one of 238 such projects in 39 states and D.C. and six countries- broke ground last Tuesday in Stamford, Connecticut. The mixed-use Metro Green will include 238 units of rental and condominium apartments, including 50 affordable housing units which constitute Phase I of the project. Jonathan Rose Companies has teamed up with W&M Properties for the residential component, which independently will seek LEED Gold under New Construction.
