Even as we continue to monitor the chaos in the green commercial real estate market, there is still some pretty neat sustainable stuff happening in the local commercial interiors space. Lululemon Athletica, the Vancouver-based activewear retailer, recently opened its fourth store here in Manhattan at 481 Broadway in SoHo (between Grand and Broome). Designed by Kenneth Park Architect, the fitout of the 2670-square-foot store incorporated a variety of green design features consonant with Lulemon's mission statement: "creating components for people to live a longer, healthier, more fun life."

Audubon Society Cops Highest LEED-CI Platinum Rating Ever at 225 Varick Street

The National Audubon Society's new office space on the seventh floor of 225 Varick Street has earned the highest point total ever for a Platinum LEED for Commercial Interiors certification. USGBC formally conferred the award late last month, and the project also received honors as one of New York Construction magazine's Best of 2008 projects. We noted the project last February right after the Audubon Society moved into its new space; you may recall that during the 1990s it had renovated its former headquarters at 700 Broadway using similar sustainable design features, so green construction techniques were not foreign to the organization at all.

Flack + Kurtz Seeks LEED-CI Gold at 512 Seventh Avenue

Fresh off of its efforts to create a LEED for Commercial Interiors Platinum space for the National Audobon Society at 225 Varick Street, mechanical and electrical engineers WSP Flack + Kurtz are pursuing a LEED-CI Gold rating for the firm’s new headquarters space at 512 Seventh Avenue in Midtown (between West 37th and 38th Streets).

Designed by FXFOWLE and recently completed by general contractor Citadel Construction (noteworthy because this is the same team that executed the Audobon Society headquarters project) the 40,000-square-foot space includes cork flooring and organic carpeting; FXFOWLE only specified rapidly renewable materials for the project. A specialty recycling subcontractor diverted three quarters of all construction debris for recycling, while Citadel also implemented an internal air quality plan that segregated construction work areas with plastic shields in order to minimize dust diffusion.
