SUNY Plattsburgh, deep upstate in Clinton County, broke ground last week on a $37 million expansion and renovation of its Hudson Hall science building. The project, designed by Albany-based Envision Architects, will seek a LEED Silver rating from USGBC and will be the first new building to open on campus since the 1970s. SUNY's five-year capital budget is funding the project, which will add nearly 27,000 square feet of laboratory and lecture space. In addition to LEED-standard green design features, individual labs will be outfitted with efficient hood and ventilation systems that should reduce energy costs by over 30 percent. Envision's design also includes displays throughout the new building that will be used to educate students about sustainable building practices. Hudson Hall will remain home to Plattsburgh's Center for Earth and Environmental Science and chemistry and physics programs, as well as the Lake Champlain Research Institute and Northcountry Planetarium. Construction- which will proceed in two phases, expansion first, then renovations- should be completed sometime in 2011.
