UK-based shoe retailer Terra Plana, whose footwear is both architecturally-inspired and sustainable, recently inked a five-year deal for 2200 square feet of space at 254 Elizabeth Street in Nolita. The company is moving just two doors over from 260 Elizabeth but will more than triple its total space. The new location between Prince and Houston Streets boasts 30 feet of frontage and features interiors with 15-foot ceilings; occupancy is immediate. Sierra Realty Corp. represented both tenant and landlord KGS Elizabeth, LLC in the deal. The space was formerly occupied by Cadeau Maternity and was vacant for only four weeks (which is interesting to note in the context of current conditions in local retail market).
What's neat about Terra Plana is that the company uses its own "Eco Matrix" to judge the life cycle impact of each of its shoes, scoring individual lines based on raw material procurement, processing, manufacture, use, and disposal. Shoes include recycled bottles for mesh, recycled rice husks for soles, recycled leather and foam for footbeds, and a minimal amount of glue during manufacturing. The company's name ("flat land" in Spanish) refers to the Masias architecture of Northern Spain, a style that blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Terra Plana earned an Observer Ethical Fashion Award in 2007, a Drapers Ethical Footwear Retailer of the Year Award for 2008, and a 2010 Best in Green Award from Treehugger. The Elizabeth Street store joins existing outlets in London, Brighton, Vienna, and Ljubljiana.
