The Complexions Spa for Beauty and Wellness in Albany was completed in May of 2008 and recently earned formal Gold certification from USGBC under the LEED for New Construction rating system ("LEED-NC"). According to USGBC, although four other spas have earned LEED certification, Complexions is the first to do so under LEED-NC. The 8500-square-foot facility is located at 221 Wolf Road and incorporates a variety of green design features, including low-VOC paints and wallpaper, cork flooring, and energy efficient appliances. Complexions also purchases wind power from the Adirondacks; owner Denise Dubois notes that the project earned the bulk of its LEED points under the Energy and Atmosphere credit category. According to Ms. Dubois, the new facility's monthly electricity costs are running around $.26 per square foot, a 34 percent improvement over the costs at its former location. In 2008, the spa was one of thirteen businesses nationally and the only business in New York's Capital Region to earn an Energy Star Small Business Award from EPA. The Complexions project team included architect Greg Sellman, Naomi Miller Lighting Design, and engineers SAIC.
