We wrote about the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College last fall; designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, the $33 million, 65,000-square-foot museum earned formal LEED Silver certification from USGBC earlier this week. One notable design feature is the museum's temperature and humidity control system, which is so precise that variations of only two percent humidity and three degrees are possible; a constant interior temperature that accounts for visitor flow through the exhibition spaces is critical in protecting artwork in museum spaces. The project team featured Buffalo-based construction manager LPCiminelli and Portland, Oregon-based LEED consultants Brightworks Sustainability. As we noted previously here at gbNYC, BPAC offers 9000 square feet of galleries and 5000 square feet of educational space, featuring 7500 works of art from 600 artists, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley, and Charles Burchfield, the famous American watercolorist for whom the facility is named.
