The Barton Group's corporate headquarters in Glens Falls, New York is only the seventh building in New York State to earn a LEED Platinum rating from USGBC (and just the 105th in the entire country). The project scope contemplated the renovation of Six Warren Street, a three-story, 16,000-square-foot brick building in downtown Glens Falls that dates from 1865. Design-builder Bette & Cring completed the project in August of 2007 and Barton earned formal certification back in January. The project should boost the building's energy efficiency to 49 percent over New York State building code requirements and will source 100 percent of its electricity needs from wind power sources.

Other green features include a geothermal system, a green roof and graywater system, recycled-content office furniture, and preferred parking for cyclists and hybrid vehicles. 97 percent of the existing building's structure and shell was reused during the renovation and over 50 percent of construction debris was recycled. LEED certification and energy modeling consultants EYP also helped secure nearly $69,000 in financial incentives for the project through NYSERDA's New Construction Program. The building also boasts what EYP calls the first green elevator in New York (which we're curious to investigate a bit more closely).

The Barton Group was founded in 1878 and has operated in Warren County, New York ever since; it mines and mills garnet out of the upstate Adirondacks. Note the view of the mountains from Six Warren's green roof in the image below.
