Gore Looking for LEED Office Space in Gotham

Al Gore’s investment firm, Generation Investment Management LLP, is looking for green office space in New York City, according to a report that appeared yesterday in Crain’s. Generation was founded back in 2004 and has offices in London and Washington, with another to open in Melbourne next year. The firm donates five percent of its profits to The Generation Foundation, a non-profit organization “dedicated to strengthening the field of sustainable development and sustainability research worldwide.”

The announcement is particularly noteworthy because Sally Wilson, global director of environmental strategy for CB Richard Ellis, said that the space “must meet standards for energy efficiency and environmental friendliness set by the U.S. Green Building Council.” Given the small number of commercial buildings that have been certified here to date, Ms. Wilson’s task may be difficult. While a number of commercial LEED buildings are under construction (and more being announced with increasing frequency) an immediate move into existing LEED-certified space might not be possible. Still, the announcement that such a high-profile tenant is exclusively seeking LEED space is an important first, as well as a major boost for USGBC, and could spur owners reluctant to pursue certification to reconsider.
