gbNYC Tours N.Y. Times Tower

Back in late April, I had the opportunity to tour the new New York Times Tower on 8th Avenue. It’s not a LEED building, but co-developer Forest City Ratner and architects Renzo Piano and FXFOWLE incorporated a variety of sustainable elements into the design, the most visible of which are the thousands of ceramic tubes that hang off the exterior of the double-glazed, low-emissivity curtain wall and assist in decreasing the amount of energy necessary to cool the building. The construction company I used to work for served as the general contractor on the project and my old boss was kind enough to take me all over the building on a gorgeous Friday afternoon - I’ve posted the photos that I took on Flickr and added some comments where appropriate.
