Fresh Environmental Goals from FreshDirect
In a letter that was emailed to customers yesterday (a copy of which doesn't appear to be available yet online), FreshDirect described in some detail the scope of its environmental efforts that it continues to implement in connection with its New York City operations (now being carried out in the company’s fifth year of existence). First, FreshDirect has partnered with NYC-based Tri-State Biodiesel, which uses cooking oil that the company donates from its kitchens to produce non-toxic diesel fuel. By the end of 2008, FreshDirect plans on using biodiesel fuel in all of its delivery trucks. Currently, the company’s trucks deliver food in boxes that use 100 percent recycled fiber content, but within the next three years, it will eliminate virtually all cardboard delivery boxes and replace them with recyclable plastic tote and grocery bags.
FreshDirect also recognizes the importance of sourcing food from local farmers and suppliers, and it plans to continue to expand its already significant local selection. Moreover, by the end of the 2007, its Seafood Department will display each product's sustainability status, and the company will continue to work to increase its fish offerings that have been certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Finally, the best definitions of sustainability include social activism within their purview, and FreshDirect is one of the largest donors to City Harvest - which helps feed needy New Yorkers; the company plans on continuing its work with this extremely important organization.
