Cromley Lofts in Alexandria is the State of Virginia’s first LEED-certified condominium development, a three-story, eight-unit adaptive reuse project that earned a Gold rating from USGBC after completion earlier this year. Many of my friends from law school live in Northern Virginia, so this was a particularly interesting project for me to hear about from my good friend Emily, who briefed me about it last weekend when Allison and I saw her at a law school classmate’s wedding in the lovely
Of particular import, the design team doubled the insulation R-values as by code and installed double-paned Argon-filled windows and doors in order to reduce anticipated energy consumption by twenty percent. Natural cork flooring was installed in each unit, and each kitchen includes custom-designed bamboo cabinets. The building’s old tar and gravel roof was also replaced with a beautifully-landscaped green roof. The Lofts are located within a half mile of the Metro, a quarter mile of bus stops, and include interior storage space for bicycles. The lofts are beautiful and in a fantastic location. A fine example of form meeting function!
Im really glad to hear that
Im really glad to hear that the DC area finally has developers taking initiative for LEED certification. While Fenty, the DC Mayor, may be pushing strongly towards a green city, few developers are taking heed at the possible changes in building requirements this city may impose. Lets hope more developers will follow.
