Finally, New York Public Library’s Battery Park City Branch Earns LEED Gold

Two years after it opened, the New York Public Library’s Battery Park City branch in the LEED Gold-certified Riverhouse condominium development now has a LEED Gold rating of its own.

It’s been nearly two years since the New York Public Library‘s Battery Park City branch opened in the LEED Gold-certified Riverhouse condominium development at 175 North End Avenue. The $6.7 million library – which was designed by 1100 Architect – features 23,000 volumes and wood floors built with scraps from old window frames, truck tires that serve as carpeting, and a recycled glass terrazzo staircase.

Now, the library has finally earned formal LEED Gold certification from USGBC under the Commercial Interiors rating system, an effort spearheaded by the project’s LEED consultant atelier ten. The 10,500-square-foot space features extensive natural daylighting: the Sheldrake Organization, which developed the Riverhouse, agreed to modify the design of the residential tower’s facade so its northeast corner (pictured above) would be all-glass. Lighting fixtures also feature automatic daylight dimmers, compact fluorescents, and low-energy LEDs.

And the main entrance also features an interactive display that allows patrons to monitor energy and water consumption data from the space’s building management system.

The project team also included MEP engineers Buro Happold Consulting Engineers and construction manager LiRO. atelier ten also served as the project’s lighting consultant.
