DAS and SKYed are delighted to invite visitors to an Open House and Tour of the DAS LEED-Registered Showroom this Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 from 5pm to 8pm at 875 Sixth Avenue. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org. Click here for more information.
UK-based DAS Business Furniture is one of the largest trading desk manufacturers in the world. Recently, the company opened its state-of-the-art DAS USA Showroom at 875 Avenue of the Americas in the landmarked Greeley Square Building (Sixth Avenue at West 31st Street). The space was designed by DAS’s in-house architect Joshua Hannum; consultants SKYed, LLC are assisting DAS pursue LEED for Commercial Interiors 2009 certification.
Green design features incorporated into the DAS showroom include a SEER 16, energy-efficient HVAC system replacing window-mounted AC units, 76 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills, reclaimed/reused/redeployed materials (both raw materials and finished furniture), and VoIP and video conferencing integrated solutions from BBH. In addition to BBH’s technology solutions, all equipment installed on the project is Energy Star-compliant, including monitors, computers, printers, a mini-refrigerator and dishwasher.
Salvaged FSC-certified Canal Zapatero veneer and solid hardwoods are found in the cabinetry, baseboards, and conference table. Note that the space’s use of the wood, which was underwater-logged from the Panama Canal, is a fascinating story of finding a silver lining from an environmental catastrophe: in 1913, the Chagres River was dammed to create a manmade lake that flooded an entire forest of exotic hardwood trees.
Additional environment-friendly aspects include the use of low-VOC paints and adhesives, T5 energy-efficient lighting, and natural daylighting with views to the outside urban environment – including of the Sixth Avenue corridor downtown to One World Trade Center. The project is also conveniently located adjacent to over 200 rail and subway connections each day, with Penn Station and Herald Square stops just a block away.
If the Greeley Square Building sounds familiar to you it may be because, back in March of 2008, gbNYC wrote about Milliken & Company’s LEED-CI showroom in the building, which features sustainable interiors by interior design firm Studio Q, as well as separate “zones” for each brand of Milliken floor covering. (In fact, DAS’s space includes Milliken Green Guard-certified (negative carbon status and zero waste to landfill) carpeting.)
