Golden Concept: Balducci’s Café Coming to Hearst Tower Retail Space

A new Balducci’s concept café is coming to the LEED Gold-certified Hearst Tower in Midtown, building on leasing momentum in recent weeks that will finally fill up the tower’s street-level retail space.

Hearst Tower Retail Space

A new Balducci’s concept café is coming to street-level retail space at the LEED Gold-certified Hearst Tower in Midtown.

Dubbed “Gourment Café to Go,” the café will be located within 2500 square feet at the Hearst Tower’s southwest corner (pictured). In addition to custom-made salads, breads, and other high-end items, the café will also offer gourmet products from the Hearst Corporation’s California ranch, including various meats, sauces, and olive oils.

Founded in Brooklyn in 1916, Balducci’s was the first grocery in New York City to offer a butcher, fishmonger, delicatessen, and greengrocer all under one roof, eventually becoming a model for Gotham’s now ubiquitous specialty markets.

Gourmet Café to Go’s lease at the Hearst Tower is for 15 years at $200 per square foot. After what seems like what was an interminably long dry spell, the retail deal is the second in a matter of weeks for Hearst. Last month, Seattle-based cookware purveyor Sur La Table signed on for a 6000-square-foot flagship space, its third in New York City.
