Starwood’s Element Ewing is New Jersey’s First LEED-Certified Hotel

The hospitality industry’s global green building leader has added the Garden State to its list of locations where guests can book rooms in a LEED-certified Element hotel.

Element Ewing

Almost three years ago, we wrote about Starwood’s plans to develop one of its Element brand hotels in Ewing, New Jersey. Located just outside of Trenton in Mercer County, the hotel features 127 guest rooms with a modern design aesthetic.

Recently, the Element Ewing formally earned an unspecified level of LEED certification from USGBC, becoming the Garden State’s first and only hotel to date to obtain the designation. The hotel is the 4th in North America and the 15th in Starwood’s global portfolio to get certified (a figure the company notes is the most of any worldwide hospitality company).

LEED-standard features in each room at the Element Ewing include Energy Star-rated appliances and lighting, water-efficient fixtures, and low-VOC and recycled-content materials. Windows are oversized to maximize natural daylight and are complemented by compact fluorescent light bulbs. The hotel also recently installed a ChargePoint electric vehicle charging station and offers priority parking spaces for hybrid vehicles.

“LEED certification is a terrific achievement for the Element Ewing Hopewell team, a real win for New Jersey, and a meaningful milestone for our guests,” said Starwood Senior Vice President Brian McGuinness in a press release. “The hotel’s certification proves that green practices can enhance every aspect of a hotel’s operation, from providing great guest experiences to enriching a neighborhood.”

After a slow start in comparison to other sectors, the hospitality industry appears to be paying closer attention to green building practices. Locally, Starwood’s efforts come on the heels of the debut of the LEED Silver-hopeful InterContinental Hotel on 8th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen and the New York Palace’s ambitious sustainability program.
