Green Business Law: Brooklyn Moving Company Trademarks “GothamBoxes”

In what seems to be an increasing corporate trend, a Brooklyn-based moving company has earned a trademark for its green moving practices.

According to this week’s edition of Crain’s, Brooklyn-based moving company Movers Not Shakers recently received a trademark for the term “GothamBoxes.” The firm distributes these reusable plastic crates to clients rather than cardboard boxes, which it will drop off one week prior to a client’s move and then pick up again one week afterwards. Dubbed GothamBoxes, the crates are designed to hold the equivalent of one hundred cardboard boxes.

Movers Not Shakers is committed to sustainability; the firm donates $200 each month to the Prospect Park Alliance in order to help offset its carbon footprint and converted its fleet of moving trucks to biodiesel over the summer. Although it’s a much smaller firm than PNC Bank, Movers Not Shakers is the second company in recent weeks to announce a green trademark.

Mark Ehrhardt, who owns the firm, told Crain’s that “[w]e have to do everything we can to reverse what’s going on with the environment.” Expect the green trademark floodgates to open in the coming months as more firms recognize the myriad advantages that sustainable business practices afford them.

    This is a great idea. The reduction in cardboard boxes thrown out will be significant. Hopefully more companies will be quick to adopt green/sustainable practices.
